CUMMINS LAYS OFF 30

Monday, February 2nd, 2009 -- 12:12 PM

More tough economic news for the local area.

30 employees of Cummins Filtration in Neillsville were let go Friday.

"The recession is hitting all aspects of the economy in a very real way," says company spokesman Mark Land, "Our demand has been falling in our plants. We're working very hard to keep our costs in line with demand for our products."

The cuts reduce the workforce at the Neillsville plant to 240 people. It?s unclear if other cuts will be necessary.

"The short answer is it's impossible to say there aren't going to be any other cuts," Land states, "If there is a significant downward change, we may have to come back and do more, we just don't know at this point."

Cummins manufactures filtration, exhaust, coolant and fuel additive systems for all engine-powered systems. Their clients include Harley Davidson, International Truck, John Deere and Freightliner.

"We are a supplier...so as demand for the vehicles drop, obviously, demand for the products drop. It's really just a trickle-down effect," he says.

The layoffs were spread over all three shifts. Employees were offered severance packages, but the layoffs were immediate.
