Wednesday, January 28th, 2009 -- 12:16 PM
A local school has made the commitment to cut 10% of its energy use this year.Greenwood Public Schools has joined the Energy Star School Challenge.
In return for their commitment to look for efficiencies, the state has chipped in with technical assistance, trainings and strategic advice.
"One example that we just recently completed over Christmas is insulating the roof of the Industrial Arts area," Superintendent Tom Nykl says, "which has had a tremendous impact in terms of how often that heating system is kicking on."
The district is also educating staff and students about simple things they can do to cut costs.
"One thing that we've initiated this year is having staff not use personal electrical products in their classrooms, like refrigerators and coffee pots. That can actually save quite a bit," Nykl says.
