Gov. Jim Doyle's budget director says the federal economic stimulus plan could provide $2.5 billion to help pay for health care and education needs in Wisconsin.Budget director Dave Schmiedicke says considerably more could be coming for transportation projects and other infrastructure needs.
Wisconsin faces a projected $5.4 billion shortfall by mid-2011.
Without federal help, Schmiedicke says Wisconsin faces "dramatic cuts" to balance the budget.
Legislative budget committee co-chair Rep. Mark Pocan, a Democrat from Madison, says no solution to balancing the budget including raising taxes is being ruled out.
