NO CHARGES IN ACCIDENT THAT KILLED CHIPPEWA CO. DEPUTY

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008 -- 11:04 AM

The driver that struck an on-duty Chippewa County deputy will not face criminal charges.

Erica Kressin of Chippewa Falls was driving the car that hit and killed Deputy Jason Zunker as he was helping at the scene of a truck fire on Highway 53 north of bloomer the night of January 4.

After reviewing the case, Washburn County District Attorney Mike Bitney says he believes a charge of homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle is not warranted against.

Bitney says the crash should have been avoided, but other factors, including the location of the squad car, contributed to the crash.

Bitney says Kressin will be cited for inattentive driving and failure to change lanes for an emergency vehicle.
