Wausau Man Found Guilty of Abusing/Injuring Three Dogs

Tuesday, November 21st, 2023 -- 12:00 PM

(Mike Leischner, WSAU) A 24-year-old Wausau man charged with felony counts for animal cruelty will avoid prison time if he completes a probation term.

According to Mike Leischner with WSAU, Chase Leroy was found guilty of abusing or injuring three dogs on three separate occasions. A judge ordered him to complete four years of probation, including a one-year stay in the Marathon County jail, with home monitoring privileges.

Leroy will not be allowed to live in a home with animals during the four-year probation. If he fails to complete the term, he could face a more serious sentence. The sentence was part of a deal that saw Leroy plead guilty to a count of mistreatment of animals causing death. Several other charges were dismissed but read in.

Investigators found that Leroy had beaten one dog to the point that she required surgery. A veterinarian also observed an older fracture on the animal. A second dog was regularly left outside without adequate water.

A third was left outside in sub-zero temperatures. The plea deal covered three open cases and also included a guilty plea to charges of battery and disorderly conduct in a domestic abuse setting.
