(Wisconsin Ag Connection) The Wisconsin State Senate has passed a bill that would allow for the more efficient transportation of milk and milk products in the state.

According to the Wisconsin Ag Connection, the bill, Senate Bill 431, was authored by Senator Joan Ballweg (R-Markesan) and Representative Tony Kurtz (R-Wonewoc) and passed unanimously.

The bill would create a Department of Transportation (DOT) permit to haul milk and whey from cheese making in semi-tractor trailers with six axles at 98,000 pounds. This would allow for the transport of more milk on fewer trips, reducing fuel consumption and wear and tear on roads.

The bill is supported by the Wisconsin Farm Bureau and the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association. It is now expected to go before the Wisconsin State Assembly.
