Man Arrested After Two-Week Manhunt Charged in Marathon County Court

Wednesday, November 15th, 2023 -- 11:01 AM

(Mike Leischner, WSAU) A Wausau man who was the subject of a two-week manhunt is now facing more than a dozen counts related to domestic abuse and theft.

According to Mike Leischner with WSAU, Walter Calloway was in court on Monday to formally face the counts. Among them were multiple counts of strangulation, recklessly endangering safety, and intimidating a victim in a domestic abuse setting.

Investigators say Calloway threatened to shoot a woman multiple times. In at least one incident he’s accused of holding a gun to her head after he took her apartment keys. He’s also accused of strangling her after she called police to report the abuse.

Officers escorted the woman back to her apartment in late October. They entered the apartment first and found Calloway in the bathroom, but before they could take him into custody he escaped through a bathroom window.

Five days later officers put out a be on the lookout for him, noting that he had two felony warrants out and had recently missed a court appearance. He was arrested two weeks later in Wausau.

Calloway is being held on a $75,000 cash bond and will return to court on November 22nd for a preliminary hearing. He has not entered a plea to the charges.
