DATCP Says Medicare and ACC Open Enrollment Brings Out Scammers

Tuesday, November 14th, 2023 -- 11:00 AM

(Raymond Neupert, WRN) Open enrollment for Medicare and Affordable Care Act Insurance plans brings scammers out in force.

Open enrollment for Medicare and Affordable Care Act Insurance plans brings scammers out in force. Wisconsin Division of Consumer Protection Director Michael Domke said:

"It's just another one of those opportunities where subscribers may be expecting or think they might be getting a call from Medicare, because open enrollment requires you sometimes to acknowledge that you want to continue receiving the services that you have."

Domke continued, "We're seeing scammers start reaching out to the subscribers and telling them that they need to verify their personal information or maybe even asking for their Medicare number to verify to make sure they continue to receive services."

Domke says his department is seeing their usual increase of complaints about insurance scams. "Some of those classic pitches on traditional Medicare scams, but the volume is higher now, because you're seeing everyone, all the subscribers really paying attention to it."

As ever, if someone claiming to be from a government agency is demanding immediate payment over the phone, just hang up. If someone is asking for personal information and you're unsure who you're talking to, hang up, and call a trusted number for that agency or insurer.
