President Biden Calls on Congress to Provide $16 Billion for Child Care Programs; How Much Would Wisconsin Receive?

Tuesday, November 7th, 2023 -- 11:01 AM

(Madison Lammert, Appleton Post-Crescent) President Joe Biden is calling on Congress to provide $16 billion in stabilization funding for child care programs nationwide.

According to Madison Lammert with the Appleton Post-Crescent, on Thursday, the White House released data detailing just how much funding Wisconsin would receive if the proposal goes through.

The $16 billion would provide an additional year of child care stabilization funding, which ran out Sept. 30. Under the request, Wisconsin would receive $229 million.

Biden’s request echoes that of the Child Care Stabilization Act, a bill put forth in September by Democratic lawmakers that hopes to continue the Child Care Stabilization Grant Program. This program was created under the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 to keep child care businesses afloat during the pandemic.

But while the bill introduced in September asked for funding for the next five years and did not include state-specific allocations, Biden’s request was described as “emergency” one-year funding in a press briefing Thursday.
