State Assembly Committee Hears Comments on Bill to Increase Security and Protections for Poll Workers

Friday, November 3rd, 2023 -- 11:00 AM

(Raymond Neupert, WRN) At the Capitol on Thursday, a bill to protect poll workers and election officials got a public hearing.

At the Capitol on Thursday, a bill to protect poll workers and election officials got a public hearing. It prevents release of private information about clerks and poll workers. Rock County Clerk Lisa Tollefson said there are holes in the bill. "I trained hundreds of poll workers, they are appointed by their municipalities. What if I give out the information without realizing it?"

Tollefson said she appreciates the offer of security. "I am one of those election officials that had Sheriff's Department protection for a while after the 2020 election. I know that my situation was not as bad as some of the others."

But Tollefson said other parts of the bill need work, including prohibiting the release of poll worker information. She said some of that information is public record and available in other ways.
