Wisconsin's Joint Finance Committee Passes $2 Billion Dollar GOP Tax Cut Plan

Wednesday, November 1st, 2023 -- 1:01 PM

(Raymond Neupert, WRN) The legislative joint finance committee has passed a Republican tax cut aimed at workforce development.

Republicans on the Legislature’s budget committee have approved their plan to improve Wisconsin’s workforce. The action comes after the rejection of Democratic Governor Tony Evers plan to spend part of the budget surplus on child care, paid family leave and UW pay increases.

Whitefish Bay Democrat Deb Andraca called the move partisan. "The legislature is basically a game of ping pong these days. The governor proposes something then Republicans propose something else, and nothing gets done. And I know you're hearing it from your constituents as well. Everyone is tired of this."

Kenosha Democrat Tip McGguire says Republicans refuse to compromise. "Time and again, when the governor comes forward, and he puts these ideas on the table, you refuse to work with him."

Madison Democrat Kelda Roys says Republicans are driving off working families. "They're not looking at the marginal tax rate of the state income tax. They're looking at, where are their good schools? Where can their kids go to a great public university with in-state tuition? Where are the good job opportunities? Where can they get childcare?"

The bill will head back to the Senate and Assembly for approval. Governor Evers is likely to veto it.
