New Dog Park Opens in Wisconsin Rapids

Friday, October 13th, 2023 -- 11:01 AM

(Mike Leischner, WSAU) After years of planning and a few months of construction the Wisconsin Rapids Room to Zoom Dog Park has opened on Saratoga Street near Mid-State Technical College.

According to Mike Leischner with WSAU, Mayor Shane Blaser says it was a satisfying afternoon for him, as the park has been one of his pet projects over his four years in office.

“I think it’s huge. You can see by the participation of the people that are here. The [number of] dogs having this large area to run, I think it’s very important for the community,” said Blaser. “This is a space for dogs to be able to enjoy an open area [with their] families.”

The park consists of a nine-acre area for large dogs which includes a green space and some trees. There is also a one-acre small dog park nearby. Blaser adds that he hopes the city continues to maintain the park because he feels it is a community asset.

That includes the possibility of an asphalt walking path around the inside of the fence, dog agility equipment and other toys, and picnic shelters and tables for families. “We need to maintain it and expand on amenities within the park,” added Blaser.

Representatives from the Heart of Wisconsin Chamber of Commerce were on hand for the ribbon cutting along with dozens of dog lovers and their pets. Blaser says the city plans to install an information kiosk near the entrance of the park shortly as well.

The city is also accepting donations for upkeep, information on how to contribute can be found on the city’s website.
