(Thomas Schumacher, WSAU) Four Republican Wisconsin legislators held a press conference on Tuesday as new legislation on tax cuts is about to be heard by the state's Ways & Means Committee.

According to Thomas Schumacher with WSAU, Rep. Donna Razor of Marshfield says this bill will be critical for retired taxpayers. "With this part of the package, 98% of our retirees will not have to pay income taxes. And retirees that are on fixed incomes, this is very important because inflationary challenges have really hurt them."

Rep. Pat Snyder said this bill would keep Wisconsin competitive with neighboring states.

"This is something that will keep up competitive with our neighbors both in Illinois as well as in Iowa and even Michigan. So, as Representative Rozar said, we want to keep people here if they want to be here over the winter and not spend six months and a day in Florida and no longer be Wisconsin residents."

Reps. Snyder and Rozar were joined by Reps. Calvin Callahan and Scott Krug. Snyder said one of the goals of the bill will be to keep young workers in the state.

"I believe it was 22 million people have fled to four southern states in the southeast because of taxes. So, if we want to keep the younger generation or bring back the 30 somethings that grew up in Wisconsin, and maybe want to get closer to grandma and grandpa, we have to make it a good environment. And one of the areas is taxes."

The representatives stated that the bill would save the average Wisconsin taxpayer $772 per year and would cut nearly a total of $3 billion in taxes. A 2022 study by Forward Analytics found that Wisconsin will likely lose around 130,000 young workers by 2030.
