Officials with Central Wisconsin Airport Welcomes Avelo Airlines to the Family

Thursday, July 20th, 2023 -- 9:00 AM

(Mike Leischner, WSAU) Officials with the Central Wisconsin Airport are welcoming Avelo Airlines to their family.

According to Mike Leischner with WSAU, the Houston-based ultra-low-cost carrier will begin offering flights from the Mosinee facility to Orlando this fall- Avelo head of network planning Trevor Yealey says they are excited to plant their flag at an under-served airport. "With the community, and just the demographics of the area, we're confident we'll be able to pick up many travelers that go down to Florida."

He says they'll start small with flights on Tuesdays and Sundays but they don't want to stay on that schedule. "The goal is always to grow into something larger than just two flights a week. But, we'll start here and add and build on the, hopefully, successful foundation we'll build."

He says they don't want to siphon business away from Delta and American- their goal is to help grow the airport to offer more options for travelers. "I want to be able to fly out of my local airport, but there's no service, so I'm just going to avoid the trip. Maybe it will be next year for our families. We want to connect these small cities to these places, so that folks can avoid the hassel of a big airport."

He says he could easily envision adding more direct flights from CWA, including one that traditionally catches a lot of attention, Las Vegas. "I can't make any promises, but it makes everybody's ears perk up. We'll see how Orlando responds here, but we're confident that folks will take to Orlando and we'll take it one step at a time."

He says they will be evaluating metrics right away to see if new destinations can be added in the coming months. "So, we'll want to get customers on those first flights and, if we can do that, we're confident we can serve more destinations."

Introductory rates for the Orlando flights will be 49 dollars one way, or just under 100 dollars round trip. The first flight will take off October 5th, with the airline running Boeing 737 aircraft with about 180 seats on each flight. That introductory fare expires on July 29th, and trips booked on that rate must be completed by January 8th.

Avelo is relatively new to the airline industry, they began offering flights in April 20-21 with hubs across the country from Burbank, California to New Haven, Connecticut. Other markets they serve include Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, Las Vegas, and Philadelphia
