Evers Signs Carjacking, Reckless Driving Bills

Thursday, May 11th, 2023 -- 12:01 PM

(Bob Hague, WRN) Drivers found guilty of reckless driving or carjacking will face increased penalties under bills signed into law Wednesday by Governor Tony Evers.

The reckless driving law doubles fines from a maximum of $200 to $400. The maximum penalty for a second or subsequent offense would increase from $500 to $1,000. It also adds surcharges for offenders.

The other new law puts vehicle theft statutes into a new carjacking category, and increases the maximum prison sentence for carjacking from 40 to 60 years. Both measures received broad bipartisan support from state lawmakers.
