Marshfield Common Council Hears Almost Two Hours of Public Comment Regarding a Pride Event in Marshfield on June 24th

Wednesday, May 10th, 2023 -- 10:01 AM

An hour and forty-five minutes of Tuesday’s Marshfield Common Council Meeting was taken up by the public comment period.

A large crowd of citizens appeared during the Council meeting to voice their thoughts/opinions/concerns/support of an upcoming event in Marshfield. On Saturday, June 24th, the 3rd Annual Marshfield Pride Event will be held at the Wenzel Family Plaza in downtown Marshfield.

According to Marshfield Pride’s Facebook page, the event "will feature food, vendors, competitions, giveaways, drag, and more." It continued saying, "local musical artists and drag performers will also be gracing the stage throughout the day."

For those in support of the event, they asked the Mayor and Common Council to allow them to keep the event at Wenzel Plaza. They said this event and the drag show are not erotic or provocative and it was appropriate for children.

They continued saying it is a place of love and support for the LGBTQ community. They felt there was a lot of confusion and misinformation about the event and drag shows in general. They encouraged those in opposition to the event to come and see what they’re all about.

Those in opposition to the event, asked the Mayor and Common Council to move the event from Wenzel Plaza. They said they didn’t want to cancel the event outright, but felt it would be more suited for a park out of town or the fairgrounds.

Their main concern was the effect it could possibly have on children. They felt it is not appropriate for a child to witness these events. They repeatedly stressed they were not coming from a place of hatred or bigotry; they are simply opposed to the idea of a child seeing the drag show and, in many cases, stated it went against their religious beliefs and they quoted various scriptures.

This item was not on the agenda and no action was taken by the Common Council.
