Marshfield Fire and Rescue Department Presents its Youth Firesetter Intervention and Prevention Program

The Marshfield Fire and Rescue Department is excited to present its Youth Firesetter Intervention and Prevention Program.
This program identifies, guides, and provides resources to children demonstrating fire-setting behavior. Examples, not limited to of these behaviors include the following; pulling fire alarms, dangerous play with fireworks, and starting small fires.
An adult recognizing these behaviors is the first step in getting their child help. This is an adaptable program that offers help to children of all ages. The department currently has five firefighters trained as Youth Firesetting Intervention Specialists, allowing them to evaluate the child and identify the specific help that child requires.
The firefighter will work closely with the child and their family to guide them through the program. This program is designed to benefit the families of our community. We want to help those in need of our services. Provided are a few steps families can take to help their child be more fire safe:
- Teach children the dangers of fire (physical and legal);
- Keep matches and lighters out of sight and reach of children;
- Adults set a good example of fire safety when using lighters, games, and candles;
- Teach children to show you when they find matches or lighters;
- Teach children how to use proper safety techniques when around fire;
- Teach young children that fire is a tool, not a toy, only used by adults;
- Regularly inspect your home for hazards;
- Install and maintain working smoke detectors;
- And plan and practice home escape drills.
Our goal is to promote this program during Arson Awareness Week, which is May 7 -14, 2023. Parents and caretakers are encouraged to seek assistance from the Marshfield Fire and Rescue Department if a child is suspected of fire-setting behavior.
