COUNTY SALES TAX DEBATE COMING BACK?

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007 -- 8:42 AM

With the budget looking grim for 2009, the possibility of the county looking into the half-percent sales tax was floated again at Tuesday's meeting.

Greenwood supervisor Rodger Ashbeck, who used to oppose the implementation of the tax, indicated he may have softened to the idea because the state continued to issue unfunded mandates.

"Let's face it, the funding of this county has changed between Madison isn't sending up enough money, but they're still sending unfunded mandates," Ashbeck said. "We need to look at a sales tax at some time to rebuild our fund balances."

"You cannot continue to have an increase in wages and everything else, which (employees) have coming, and give up a million dollars and only have $300,000 coming in. It's not going to work."
