Free SMV Signs Available To Farmers

Saturday, April 29th, 2023 -- 8:16 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Wisconsin farmers can now get Slow Moving Vehicle (SMV) signs for free from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT).

The SMV signs are designed to help reduce the number of accidents that occur between motorists and slow-moving vehicles, such as tractors, on public roadways. The signs feature a bright orange triangle with a red border and are required by law to be displayed on any vehicle traveling at speeds of 25 mph or less. In addition to tractors, SMV signs are also used on other slow-moving vehicles such as horse-drawn carriages, farm wagons, and construction equipment. WisDOT encourages farmers to take advantage of this free program, as SMV signs can help improve visibility and reduce the risk of accidents. They can be obtained by filling out an online form or by calling WisDOT's Bureau of Highway Maintenance.

According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), agricultural workers have one of the highest rates of occupational fatalities in the United States. In 2019, there were 257 fatal work-related injuries in agriculture, forestry, fishing, and hunting industries. By properly displaying SMV signs, farmers can help reduce the risk of accidents on public roads and highways. The SMV sign program is just one of the many ways WisDOT is working to improve safety on Wisconsin roads. The department also offers a variety of resources and programs to help educate drivers and promote safe driving habits. Overall, the free SMV sign program is a valuable resource for Wisconsin farmers and a step forward in promoting safety on public roads.
