(Raymond Neupert, WRN) Be wary of where and how you're buying prom and wedding dresses this spring.

Be wary of where and how you're buying prom and wedding dresses this spring. Lisa Schiller with the Better Business Bureau says the recent bankruptcy announcement of David's Bridal shows how important it is to get your dresses early and to make sure to pick them up after alterations.

"We recommend you know buying a wedding dress six, nine months if possible before the big day. You don't need as much time for prom or other special occasions obviously."

Schiller says you should come into a dress fitting clear-headed, despite the emotional experience. "Never feel pressured into paying the entire cost of a wedding dress or other dress upfront."

Schiller says you shouldn't be buying event dresses online without being sure there's a physical location you can go to for a fitting. "The website might look legitimate, they might even have an address or a phone number on the website. You know what, take a minute to do a reverse check on that address."

Schiller says you should be planning for your dress at least six months in advance to be sure it's ready for your wedding day, and never pay full money for a dress before delivery.
