File an Extension if Your Taxes Won't be Done by Next Week

Thursday, April 13th, 2023 -- 2:01 PM

(Raymond Neupert, WRN) If you're not going to have your taxes done by next week, you should file for an extension.

If you're not going to have your taxes done by next week, you should file for an extension. IRS Spokesman Christopher Miller says you can file that electronically at IRS dot Gov. "You electronically file a Form called 4868 and then you get an automatic six months to file your tax return."

Miller says you'll need to still make a payment if you owe money this year. "Make sure that you do that by the deadline, even if you're filing for an extension of time to actually file your tax return."

You can get a six-month extension on filing your return by filling out Form 4868 at IRS dot Gov. Miller says the penalties for filing a late return are worse than owing late taxes.
