FBI Warning Consumers About "Juice Jacking"

Thursday, April 13th, 2023 -- 8:00 AM

(Thomas Schumacher, WSAU) The FBI is warning consumers about “juice jacking,” where bad actors use public chargers to infect phones and devices with malware.

According to Thomas Schumacher with WSAU, DATCP's Director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection Micheal Domke says there are ways to prevent these scams. "And so the perfect way to avoid that is to use your own cable and, if possible, use your own charger box and cable with it."

Domke added that some of the early warning signs of the malware may be noticeable. "You're going to see that maybe you can't get into some of your apps. Maybe the password has changed or, unfortunatley, one of the big indicators, maybe you login to one of your bank accounts or credit cards account and you see there's new charges or missing funds."
