County Health Rankings and Roadmaps for the State of Wisconsin

County Health Rankings & Roadmaps brings actionable data, evidence, guidance and stories to support community-led efforts to grow community power and improve health equity.

The University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute created CHR&R for communities across the nation, with funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. This year, we focus on the connection between civic health and thriving people and places.

Civic health reflects the opportunities people have to participate in their communities. It starts in our local communities and is the cornerstone of our democracy, representing promise, opportunity, belonging and shared responsibility.

For the State of Wisconsin, they have less premature deaths than the U.S. as a whole with 6,600 compared to 7,300. For quality of life factors, 12% of Wisconsin residents have poor or fair health, which is the same as the U.S.

3.2 Wisconsin residents have poor physical health days compared to 3% of residents in the U.S. 4.4 Wisconsin residents have poor mental health days, which is the same as the U.S. And 8% of babies born in Wisconsin have low birth weight compared to 8% of all babies born in the U.S.

For the County Rankings, out of 72:

  • Clark County comes in at 48;
  • Chippewa is 21st;
  • Eau Claire is 17th;
  • Jackson is 64th;
  • Wood is 57th;
  • Marathon is 24th;
  • And Taylor is 7th.

Clark County:

  • Has around 7,000 premature deaths;
  • 15% of residents have poor or fair health;
  • 3.6 residents have poor physical health days;
  • 4.6 residents have poor mental health days;
  • And 5% of babies have low birth weight.

For Wood County:

  • They have around 7,300 premature deaths;
  • 12% have poor or fair health;
  • 3.3 residents have poor physical health days;
  • 4.7 residents have poor mental health days;
  • And 7% of babies have premature birth weight.
