The melting snow and warmer temperatures is causing issues in the City of Marshfield.

As the snow melts, it’s revealing discarded syringes. It’s illegal to put needles and other sharp medical items in the recycling, medication, or trash bin. If you find a needle, the Marshfield Police Department says you should put on heavy gloves and pick up the needle with a pliers or tongs and place it in a thick plastic container like a laundry detergent bottle.

You should then screw on the lid and duct tape it, making sure it’s sealed well. Finally, write do not recycle on the container and throw it away. The Department also said you can dispose of the needles in the drop box in their lobby, or any drop box, or call their department and they’ll pick it up.

The department is also working on adding future drop-off locations including Brain Park with more to come if the needles and syringes remain an issue. If you’re trying to dispose of the needle and you accidentally puncture your skin, wash the area with hot, soapy water immediately and seek medical attention.
