Bill Would Define Carjacking in State Statute

Friday, March 3rd, 2023 -- 9:00 AM

(Bob Hague, WRN) Legislation at the Capitol would define carjacking in state statute.

The bill’s author, Representative John Spiros of Marshfield, on getting a vehicle stolen while you or a loved one is in it. “You know you can go to the news and just bring up carjacking and you're gonna see something almost every day it's a scary situation.”

Alex Ayala with the Milwaukee Police Association sees a lot of victims. “In my experience as a detective in the robbery unit, that the suspects will then go and commit other carjackings and other robbery sprees and then leave behind several innocent victims.”

Ayala says there have been 100 robberies in Milwaukee so far this year. “48 of those are carjackings 43 of those are armed and five of those are strong armed. So currently we categorize or we use the robbery statute when somebody robbed somebody of their vehicle.”

Ayala said specifically defining the crime in statute will help police and prosecutors.
