Governor Evers Visits Wausau's Fire Station Number One and Police Station

Tuesday, February 21st, 2023 -- 10:00 AM

(Mike Leischner, WSAU) -Governor Tony Evers toured Wausau's Fire Station number one and police station on Monday to promote his shared revenue proposal, which he says will make a big difference for communities like Wausau, according to Mike Leischner with WSAU.

"That would dramatically increase the amount of money that goes to the municipalities. In the case of Wausau, that's about $3.5 million more than they're getting right now."

He says he's proposing that a certain percentage of that revenue be earmarked for public safety, as many communities are struggling to keep up with their department's needs. "The bottom line is that our commitment is to provide that money for local municipalities."

Evers says even as showdowns loom over other issues in the budget, he doesn't think those will impact the shared revenue proposals. "I feel real confident that this issue on shared revenue will happen. No matter what happens elsewhere in the budget."

Evers has proposed using 20 percent of the state's sales tax as shared revenue. Increasing the pot of money that the state shares with local entities has been a bipartisan effort in the new two-year budget proposal, which is currently in the hands of the legislature's joint finance committee.
