PILOT SEMINAR FOR THOSE GOING THROUGH DIVORCE PROCESS

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007 -- 12:15 PM

With the divorce-rate growing?it's now over 50-percent here in Wisconsin?a first-of-its-kind seminar aims to help people navigate a sometimes-tricky process.

"Representing Yourself in Divorce" is a seminar that's a cooperative effort between the Ninth Judicial District and North Central Technical College.

"(People) can get information about how to do it, what's going to be happening, what the paperwork is going to be like," explains Taylor County Judge Gary Carlson.

He is spearheading the pilot program, which could grow to others areas of the state in future years. He's been a judge for 28 years and has presided over thousands of divorces.

"(The seminar is) so they can get an opportunity before they go into the courtroom to understand what they are doing," Carlson says.

Those going through divorce need to decide if they'll represent themselves, or hire an attorney.

"A divorce is a pretty important aspect of a person's life: dividing up property, making decisions on maintenance, making decisions on children," Carlson notes. "For the most part, most people should have an attorney. Some people can do it just fine by themselves, others, I think, clearly should have an attorney."

Topics will range from finding and completing the necessary forms, negotiating the division of marital property and custody of children and what to expect in the courtroom setting.

The seminars cost $25 and are open to anyone. They'll be held this Saturday, October 6 and Saturday, December 1 at NTC campuses, including the one in Spencer.
