ANOTHER COLLEGE-AGE MALE DROWNS IN LA CROSSE

Monday, October 1st, 2007 -- 2:28 PM

A college-age man reportedly fell from a La Crosse bridge and drowned in the Mississippi River early yesterday morning. The death has rekindled tragic memories in an area notorious for the drownings of young drunk men.

Police say it's too early to know whether alcohol was a factor. The victim's name and age haven't been released but he's identified as a Milwaukee man who studies in the Twin Cities area.

It's not clear whether he jumped from the bridge or fell.

Witnesses called police about 1:30 a.m. after hearing the splash. A dive team found the man about an hour later but emergency personnel weren't able to revive him.

Since 1997, eight college-age man have turned up dead in a river after going missing from a bar. Some have speculated a mysterious serial killer is to blame, but authorities insist there's no evidence to suggest the deaths were anything but accidents.
