AUGUST STORMS CAUSE EXPENSIVE DAMAGE TO TRAILS

Monday, September 18th, 2006 -- 12:16 PM

The heavy rains that moved through Clark County late last month have proven costly for the popular ATV trail system, but it appears the state ? not the county ? will have to foot the bill.

Clark County trails and project manager Brian Duell says culverts were washed out and the trails suffered heavy erosion during the August 24th storm. About 35 miles of the trails north of U.S. HWY 10 were hardest hit.

?From HWY 10 to Rock Dam? the central location of (the damage) was from County HWY I to the Hay Creek (Rd) area,? Duell says.

Repairs to the trail cost around $30,000 ? that figure includes manpower and materials. Duell has received verbal confirmation that the DNR will reimburse the county for the work.

Due to the high traffic volume, trails are now constructed much like regular town roads.

?Commonly what you find on a town road is what we try to maintain (the trails) as. With a base and crown top, which is very hard to try to maintain with ATV traffic on it,? Duell says.

Clark County has around 140 miles of ATV trails.
