INVESTIGATION CONTINUES INTO HIXTON PEPPER SPRAY INCIDENT

Wednesday, September 13th, 2006 -- 2:25 PM

La Crosse County District Attorney Scott Horne says he needs more time to investigate an incident involving the use of pepper spray by a sergeant in the Jackson County Sheriff's Department.

Horne has received a report of an investigation conducted by the La Crosse County Sheriff's Department. But he says he wants to talk to the families involved, as well as as the deputy, before he makes a decision.

The investigation stems from an incident during the Fourth of July parade in Hixton. Three Hixton families filed a complaint with the Jackson County Sheriff's Department against the sergeant, claiming he pepper sprayed four children and two adults riding on a float during the parade.

Horne says additional information is needed for him to offer an informed decision. He says he hopes to make a decision within two weeks.

The La Crosse D-A was asked to handle the case because Jackson County District Attorney Anna Becker said she could have a possible conflict of interest.
