Bill Payment Website Doxo Looks at Average Monthly Bills for Marshfield

Wednesday, December 21st, 2022 -- 11:00 AM

As we enter into the thick of winter, bill payment website Doxo's recently released report, (U.S. Utilities Market Size and Household Spending Report for 2022), that examines how much Americans spend on utility bills (including electric, gas, water & sewer, and waste & recycling) each month.

The report, which looks at utility bills from both a local and national perspective, found the following:

  • Utility bills in Marshfield: $219 spent per month;
  • Utility bills in Wisconsin: $361 spent per month;
  • National Average Monthly/Annual Cost: $328 spent per month, $3,936 spent per year;
  • Percent of U.S. Households: 78% of U.S. households pay Utility bills;
  • Average Annual Cost per U.S. Household: $3,070 per year;
  • Total Utilities Market Size: $399 billion spent per year;
  • Percent of Annual Income: Utility bills amount to 6% of consumers’ income per year.

In addition to the above, Doxo has household bill pay data for Marshfield (as well as 4000 cities across the US) that looks at total amount spent per month, and breaks down bill payments into ten different categories, including utilities, auto loans, cable bills, and more.

For example:

  • Monthly bill amount in Marshfield: The average household pays $1,863 a month for the 10 most common household bills;
  • Rank in Wisconsin: Marshfield is the #52 most expensive city in Wisconsin for household expenses;
  • Marshfield's monthly bills compared to Wisconsin and national averages: The household expenses in Marshfield, on average, are 7% lower than the national average of $2,003, and 2.7% lower than the state average of $1,915.

At a Marshfield Common Council meeting last week, the Council had a long discussion on the financial stability of the city’s utilities, what to do with a surplus from the utilities, and oversight of the utilities.

That item was discussed again at last night’s meeting and a committee was approved to look into it further.
