Scam Claims to Offer Jobs Through Online Messaging Service

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2022 -- 9:00 AM

(Bob Hague, WRN) -Plenty of people are looking for part-time work to make ends meet, but be careful you're not about to get scammed.

Fox 6 Milwaukee reports that a Muskego woman nearly got caught by scammers posing as a legitimate job doing data entry for Hobby Lobby. Kathy Pickett says the scammers performed an interview over a text messaging service, then tried to get her to upload her driver's license and banking info.

"She says, "Oh, you don’t have to worry. You can trust us." State consumer protection administrator Lara Sutherlin says if an “interviewer” does that, that's a red flag. "If you can't verify the authenticity of the person that you're talking to, or the entity that you're engaging with, and you shouldn't engage"

Sutherlin says anyone asking you to pay money to get a job is also trying to scam you.
