Cases of RSV Rising, Including in Marshfield

Wednesday, November 9th, 2022 -- 1:00 PM

Cases of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are rising across the state, including in Marshfield.

On Monday, Nov. 7, Marshfield Children's Hospital has 15 confirmed inpatient (hospitalized) cases of RSV in pediatric and PICU (pediatric intensive care unit) patients. RSV is a virus that makes it difficult to breathe. It’s most common in children younger than two.

Common symptoms include difficulty breathing and wheezing. Other symptoms may include runny nose, decreased appetite, coughing and fever. The best way to treat RSV is by making sure your child can breathe, eat and drink.

Using a bulb syringe to suction mucus from their nose may be helpful. Fever-reducers can be used if they have a fever. If the baby or child is breathing too hard or too fast to feed effectively, they should be brought to the emergency department.
