Report Card Shows Persistent Racial Gap in Wisconsin Test Scores

Tuesday, October 25th, 2022 -- 9:00 AM

(Bob Hague, WRN) A national “report card” shows fourth- and eighth-grade reading and math scores declined in most states, and Wisconsin’s racial gap on test scores remains high.

The National Assessment of Educational Progress again shows Wisconsin with the highest Black-white racial gap of any state, based on average scores for both grades in each subject.

Overall scores in Wisconsin remained higher than the national average, which dropped five points in fourth grade math compared to 2019. The math score for eighth graders declined by eight points, while reading scores for both grades dropped three points.

State schools Superintendent Jill Underly said the results reflect national trends from disruptions to learning caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
