Granton Village Board Discusses Highway K Project, Village Fees, and Dollar General

Saturday, October 15th, 2022 -- 11:00 AM

The Granton Village Board discussed the Highway K Project, village fees, and the Dollar General at a Special Board Meeting.

According to the unofficial minutes from the meeting, at the September meeting, the Board asked Cedar Corp to extend a 3% discount on engineering fees to offset the additional costs the Village will incur based on their oversight with the grant application.

Cedar Corp sent an e-mail to the group after the meeting stating they could not extend a discount. The Board discussed the issues they have faced with Cedar Corp and options if they choose to go with any of the other engineers.

The Board asked if there has been any contact from Cedar Corp since their e-mail. There was not. The Board questioned if they would still be ahead if they give Cedar Corp a third chance since the grant deadlines are so close. The Board decided to keep Cedar Corp for the time being.

The Board also discussed clarification of Village Fees:

  • The backhoe is $120 per hour with a 30 min charge;
  • Mowing is a $100 flat fee;
  • Camping for electrical sites is $25, tent sites are $10;
  • Plowing and sanding is $70 per hour with a 15 minute min (this is for business district only-fire dept and school);
  • Apartment rent is $400 per month;
  • Park acreage is $500 per season;
  • Concession stand is currently $5000 per season but is being evaluated.

The Board also discussed shooting a firearm in the village. Per Village Ordinance, there is no hunting on Village property. There are several residents who target shoot on Village property down by the sewer plant.

This land is in the Town of Grant but owned by the Village. The Board agreed there will be no shooting or hunting on Village property. Clerk will have one of the guys look into signage.

Finally, the Board discussed the Dollar General. The Village is responsible for extending water and sewer to the Dollar General Parcel. Suda Plumbing quoted $6500 to complete the project. Suda Plumbing started the project on Sept 26th.

Suda Plumbing hit 2 fiber optic lines and a telephone line that Diggers Hotline failed to mark. The 8” sewer main was not where the Village expected it to be. The project was put on hold and a camera company came in and located the main and clarified questions on the Water line.

The Clerk has reached out to DG several times but there has been no response. The Village was given 75 days to run water and sewer but it is not clear when the clock starts ticking. (Once the contract is approved and signed, after closing, once earnest money is given.)

If they postpone the plumbers and they have to install water and sewer lines in the winter, the cost will go up and is also pending their availability. The Clerk will try to contact DG again and try to get more information.
