Greenwood School Board Hears Waiver Regarding Start of Next School Year

The Greenwood School Board heard information on the district’s waiver to start the next school year before September 1st.

Greenwood’s Superintendent, Joe Green, presented information on the waiver to start the school year prior to Sept. 1 and asked for any public input, but no public input was given. The Board also discussed employment matters.

They approved the hiring of Valrie Behrens as Adjusted Kids Club Contract, David Denk as Substitute Teacher, Kaitlin Raine as Long Term Substitute Teacher, and Jodie Welsh as a Substitute Teacher.

The Board also approved some volunteers including Mark Abel, Matthew Castle, Josh Grape, Brad Rowe, Amber Schoepflin, and Tina Zimmer. The Board also approved the retirement of Jean Zimmer as the Director of Business Services.

The Board also approved changing regular board meetings to the 4th Wednesday of each month and discussed options of early release, 2-hour late starts and full day closures. A letter will be shared with families.

The Board also approved applying for the School Start Date Waiver for 2023-24. Mr. Green reported on the Employee Relations Committee duties and the need for a District Leadership Team. A discussion was held on the support staff handbook, but no action was taken.

They also approved a strength, conditioning and fitness coach for all 9-12 grade students for a year. Jean Zimmer reported on the budget updates since the annual meeting. A handout was shared with the board regarding budget changes and ESSER fund changes.

Mr. Green and Ms. Zimmer met with the CESA ESSER grant people to discuss the 2022-23 budget for ESSER and what other expenses are directly allowable under ESSER III. The ESSER III budget was shared with the board.

Mr. Green also shared early graduation information and approved the Early Graduation Procedures as presented. The Board also had a discussion to remove 2022-23 District Priorities from the agenda, but no action was taken.

Also, the first reading of policy 31.2 was held. It was also mentioned that the fall regional meeting to be held October 25th will have 3 board members in attendance. Scott Mosely, gave a presentation on the Outdoor Classroom planning process.

They are looking at organizing community nature nights a few times per year. The Board also heard the Administrators’ Reports. Elementary Principal Shane Lilly reported on:

  • Receiving the National Blue Ribbon School;
  • Leadership teams and PLC’s;
  • Outdoor Classroom;
  • Upcoming training, elementary principal training, data meetings, reading buddies, Math Expressions training;
  • And the highlighted class this month is 4K class.

Athletic Director/Dean of Students Jenni Mayenschein reported on:

  • This year’s Homecoming activities;
  • Mid-term grades;
  • And Fall sports updated and updated on winter sports numbers.

The Board also heard the student report from Rogan Travis. He reported on:

  • This year’s Homecoming activities;
  • Rachel’s Closet offers student supplies and clothing and has been moved upstairs to be more available for students and allow more space for donations;
  • And Student council is looking to plan more student activities for the rest of the year.

District Administrator Joe Green reported on:

  • Threat Assessment Training;
  • Joint Board Committee updates, October 28th training;
  • Shared Food Service with Loyal;
  • Senior Privileges;
  • Mid-term grades;
  • Shared professional development on November 4;
  • Parent-teacher conferences;
  • And No school on October 21st.

Finally, Board Member Mark Lindner reported on the joint board committee meeting with Loyal School District which included discussion on:

  • Calendars;
  • Quarter vs. trimesters;
  • And school board meeting dates.
