Judge Rules Darrel Brooks Can Represent Himself at Trial for Waukesha Christmas Parade Attack

Thursday, September 29th, 2022 -- 1:01 PM

(Bob Hague, WRN) Darrel Brooks will represent himself at trial for the Waukesha Christmas parade attack.

The ruling Wednesday from Judge Jennifer Dorow,

“He is making a deliberate choice today to waive his right to an attorney and proceed without counsel. It is this court’s opinion and finding today that Mr. Brooks understands with reasonable accuracy and is aware of the difficulties and disadvantages of self-representation, the seriousness of the charges against him as well as the general range of penalties.”

Her back-and-forth with the Waukesha Christmas parade defendant in court on Wednesday may be a preview of what’s to come.

Dorow: “You are trying to interject irrelevant factors for this court..."

Brooks: "It’s not irrelevant."

Dorrow: "Stop. Stop."

Brooks: "I have a constitutional right to ask questions."

Dorrow: "Mr. Brooks I’m going to continue, please stop talking."

Brooks: "So it is a rush to judgement”

Brooks faces multiple charges for the November 2021 vehicle attack which killed six and injured dozens more. The trial is set to begin Monday in Waukesha County Court.
