(Wisconsin Ag Connection) Wisconsin's total milk production was down in July compared to the same period a year earlier.

According to the Wisconsin Ag Connection, that's according to the USDA's latest milk production report, which stated Wisconsin farmers produced 2.72 billion pounds during the month, which was 0.3 percent lower than last July, but more than the 2.67 billion made in June 2022, which had less days on the calendar.

Nationally, 18.3 billion pounds of milk were produced in the 24 major dairy states for the month. That was up 0.3 percent from 2021, and higher than the previous month's production of 18.1 billion pounds.

Meanwhile, the number of milk cows on farms in the 24 major states was 8.92 million head, 66,000 head less than July 2021, but 1,000 head more than June 2022.

The average number of milk cows on Wisconsin farms for the month was 1.27 million head, unchanged from last month, but 6,000 less than last year. Monthly production per cow averaged 2,140 pounds, which was up 21 pounds from last year's figures.
