Marshfield Police Department Warns Businesses About Scam

The Marshfield Police Department is warning of a scam affecting local businesses.

A Marshfield Business recently reported receiving a phone call from an unknown individual stating they were a “Lieutenant”. The unknown individual requested the employee of the business to collect money from the cash register and take it to another local business where they could meet.

The unknown individual was also able to mimic calling from the business owner’s phone, making it appear the owner was assisting with the investigation. The Marshfield Police Department strongly encourages taking the time and verifying the identities of people calling.

If an officer were to contact you it is always acceptable to verify our identity by calling the Wood County Dispatch at 715-387-4394.   They will never ask for a gift card or any abnormal forms of payment or meeting methods.  Please be vigilant as scammers are always creating new methods.
