Wisconsin Policy Forum Says Service Sector Jobs Not Yet to Pre-Pandemic Levels

Monday, July 25th, 2022 -- 8:00 AM

(Carl Cooley, WRN) A recent study shows that economic recovery has been uneven, following the pandemic.

The state's second-largest employment sector, food service and drinking places, is down nine percent compared to pre-pandemic job levels, according to a report from the Wisconsin Policy Forum.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data showed that in December 2021, nearly 270 thousand people were employed in the leisure and hospitality sector, but job numbers were down about 20 thousand jobs compared to December 2019.

The Wisconsin Policy Forum noted that businesses related to online shopping have grown. For the transportation and warehousing sector, more than 10 thousand jobs were added over the past two years, contributing to a six percent growth.

The state's unemployment rate is around three percent.
