Wausau Committee Approves Changes to Ordinance to Allow Goats for Weed Control

(Mike Leischner, WSAU) Wausau's public health and safety committee has approved a change in the city's forbidden animals ordinance to allow for goats in parks as a means of noxious weed control.

City and County Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Director Jamie Polley says the animals delivered smashing results last year: Polley says they may try a different approach this year and let the goats work in sections instead of giving them a whole half of Barker Stewart Island.

Polley says the project works because Goats are notoriously picky eaters. Alder Lisa Rasmussen says she was pleased with the positive feedback she received last year.

Polley adds this year's plans only include returning the goats to Barker Stewart Island, but they could be deployed to other parks in the future if needed. The change also allows for a one-day petting zoo in years where the goats are being used as an educational opportunity for the community.

The city council will give final approval to the ordinance change next week.
