DATCP Reminds Wisconsin Residents to Keep Their Passwords Secure

Friday, May 13th, 2022 -- 9:01 AM

(Raymond Neupert, WRN) Keep your passwords secure, and don't fall victim to scam popups.

That message from DATCP, after Instagram users reported losing access to their accounts due to entering their credentials into phony login messages. State consumer protection director Michael Domke says it's important to not reuse passwords. "We all know that people use the same usernames and quite often once you get one of them, then you can hop online, do a search for that, you'll see where that user name pops up."

Domke says the scammers use popups that look like real messages asking to verify your login so your account doesn't get deleted. He reminds users not to reuse passwords. "So that you don't compromise on one account at all and be compromised across the board."

Domke says the latest scams also try to get a step further by directly asking for your email logins as well.
