Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development Wants Teens to Have a Good First Work Experience

Tuesday, May 10th, 2022 -- 11:01 AM

(Raymond Neupert, WRN) The Department of Workforce Development wants to help new teen workers find a good place for their first job this summer.

Equal Rights Division administrator Jesús Villa says the department has put together a short series of videos talking about finding and keeping a job. "Talk to them about their wage rights, you know, what they need to know about overtime, how to deal with harassment in the workplace, a little bit about apprenticeship and other topics like that.”

Villa says it's important that teens get the right information before working towards their first job. "I've raised four teenagers, they've all gotten jobs in high school. And I really believe that that's an important experience for them to have."

Villa says parents and employers need to ensure that teens have a good start to their careers to let them get a feel for what a job can be. "I think we owe it to them to make sure that their early experiences in work are good experiences and positive experiences and that they have those associations, and they want to work and they want to work in Wisconsin."

You can find the videos on YouTube by searching for the Department of Workforce Development.
