Antivirals for COVID Now Readily Available in Wisconsin

Friday, May 6th, 2022 -- 2:00 PM

(Raymond Neupert, WRN) The Department of Health Services says that COVID antiviral medication is now widely available for patients in Wisconsin.

Dr. Jon Meiman says those drugs were in very limited supply in the first months of the year, but that's changed. "But fortunately, we've kind of moved on from that point, we now have enough to really treat people here in the state that are likely to benefit from either of these drugs."

Dr. Meiman says both Paxlovid and Lagevrio can help keep people out of the hospital if administered within 5 days of catching COVID. "We want to make sure this drug is being used in a way that helps people and helps our health system overall because there's a lot of potential benefits there."

Anyone with a confirmed case of COVID who doesn't need full hospitalization is encouraged to get a prescription for one of these drugs.
