Women are expected to take on many roles throughout their lives; they may juggle jobs, family, pets, friends, hobbies, home and an ever-growing to-do list.

This can leave very little time for women to focus on their own health and wellbeing. In recognition of National Women’s Health Week (May 8-14), Aspirus Health encourages women and girls of all ages to make their health a priority.

This weeklong observance, including National Women’s Checkup Day on May 9, serves as a reminder for women to take stock of any health checkups that may be overdue.

“No matter what stage of life you’re in, it’s a good idea to schedule a yearly visit with your primary care provider, even if you’re feeling healthy,” says Dr. Kelley Dilliard, a primary care physician at Aspirus Family Health Specialists, Wausau.

“Routine exams can give you and your provider a better idea of what is going on in your body and help catch problems early. They also help you to stay on schedule with important screenings based on age and health history.”

According to Aspirus Health Screening Guidelines, suggested screenings vary depending on a woman’s age and individual risk factors. Your provider may suggest the following:

  • Cholesterol, HDL, LDL and triglycerides blood test;
  • Colon cancer screening;
  • Breast cancer screening;
  • Pap smear;
  • Bone density test.

During your visit, your provider can also address any concerns and support you in managing your overall health. A primary care provider is an important ally to women as they navigate their health at all stages of life. To learn more, visit https://www.aspirus.org/primarycare.
