WILDFIRE SEASON APPROACHES

Monday, April 3rd, 2006 -- 2:42 PM

While the weekend rain has prevented tinderbox conditions around the state, a local fire official warns things can change quickly this time of year

?Until things start greening up ? which will be May ? we're going to have that wildfire threat,? says DNR Forest Ranger Larry Whaley.

Burning permits are required for people living in the DNR Fire Protection areas.

?They?re only allowed to burn from 6 p.m. until midnight with no burning on Sunday?s or holidays,? Whaley explains. ?Burning permits are free of charge and can be picked up at any DNR service center, DNR Ranger Station of from their local fire warden.?

Whaley says the permits help officials know where burning is happening and keeps the burning in the generally safer evening hours. If you?re caught burning without a permit, you?ll face a $160 citation ? but it can be worse.

?If the fire were to get out of control, the party responsible is not only responsible for the suppression costs of that fire, but also any damages that fire causes,? Whaley says. ?They will becivilly liable for any damages caused by that fire. It could get expensive.?

The wildfire season is off to a relatively quiet start locally; Whaley says there have been only five wildfires in the local area.
