Greenwood School Board Hears School Operations Update

The Greenwood School Board heard an update on the school operations plan.

The mask requirement on school buses was removed by the CDC. Also, the Board received additional information regarding the district-sponsored reading teacher licensing program. The District is currently waiting on a Memorandum of Understanding from Viterbo University.

The Board also approved a JV baseball co-op with Loyal if numbers support one. The Board received an update on ESSER funds and approved the parking lots repair and sealing bid from Asphalt Seal and Repair for $35,676.

The Board also approved the 2022-23 CESA 10 Services Contract, received a 2021-2022 financial update, and reviewed the process necessary to consider waiving certain Fund 80 costs. The Board also reviewed the NEOLA Policy Special Update regarding Nondiscrimination.

The Board also approved the Support Staff and Professional Staff compensation for 2022-23, approved funds for employee appreciation, and approved a Memorandum of Understanding with the administrator.

The Board also accepted $618.61 from Forward Bank CMMA distribution and approved a volunteer. The Board also accepted the resignation of District Administrator Todd Felhofer and Study Hall Supervisor Sue Felhofer.

The Board also approved the employment of Hanna Rakovec as the Elementary Volleyball coach and John Davidson as a JV Softball coach. The Board approved a field trip for the Physics and Anatomy/Physiology classes to the Mall of America in Bloomington, MN.

The Board also heard a presentation from Chris Schmitz, a DNR Forester. He reviewed a plan for a timber harvest in the School Forest. The Board also heard the Committee Reports. Board Member Mark Shain reported on building repairs at CESA 10.

Board Member Jerome Krempasky highlighted some of the sessions he attended at the WASB Convention. The Buildings and Grounds Committee discussed the proposed garage project, only one bid has been received and they would like at least one more bid.

They also reviewed the parking lots repair and reseal project bids. The committee recommends the Asphalt Seal and Repair bid. The committee heard about the water leak and damage which occurred over the weekend.

The Board also heard the Administrators’ Reports. Elementary Principal Joe Green:

  • Shared a review of the Literacy Night on March 3, event was well attended and featured student work and the annual book fair;
  • Summer school planning continues, Camp Invention and Invention Project will be featured again;
  • The staff in-service on February 25th was very powerful, t was focused on improving emotional health and supporting one another with empathy and compassion.

Athletic Director/Dean of Students Jenny Mayenschein:

  • Provided a wrap up of the winter sports season and a preview of the spring sport season;
  • The District is currently looking for a few spring sport season assistant coaches;
  • The new scoreboard for the football has been ordered and a new refurbished scoreboard will be installed in the East Gym;
  • Middle-High School PE classes took trips to Bruce Mound recently, students had a good time and Bruce Mound personnel complimented the students on their behavior;
  • Spring Concert is March 14th;
  • Junior Prom March 26th;
  • 3-Act Play is scheduled for April 1-3.

District Administrator Todd Felhofer reported:

  • That a number of education bills were passed by the Legislature, it appears many will be vetoed by the governor;
  • The 2022-23 Health Insurance renewal is projected to be at the 10% rate increase cap;
  • The middle-high school is reviewing a possible schedule format change;
  • The middle school students (and 6th grader) and high school students attended a presentation on the dangers of vaping on Monday, March 7th, vaping awareness posters were hung in the restrooms and locker rooms, in addition, the district has ordered vape detectors for restrooms and locker rooms;
  • Senior Awards program, Senior picnic and Class of 2022 Graduation planning is underway.

Finally, during the Communication from the public portion of the meeting, a community member asked some questions about the anti-vaping presentations that were held March 7th for middle-high school students.
