LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT BEEF UP FIRE POWER
Monday, April 3rd, 2006 -- 8:17 AM
After finding themselves ?outgunned? by criminals, the Clark County Sheriff?s Department has purchased several ?long guns?.Chief Deputy Jim Backus says deputies currently carry a handgun, but receive a fair number of gun-related calls where the perpetrator has a much more powerful weapon.
He estimates sidearms are useful from only 50 yards, where rifles are dangerous from over a mile.
The Sheriff?s Department recently purchased four ?D-P-M-S? .223-caliber rifles. They hope to add 8 more over time so their entire on-duty fleet can be equipped with the rifles.
