New Recommendations to Fight Homelessness in Wisconsin

Monday, March 7th, 2022 -- 8:10 AM

(Bob Hague, WRN) New recommendations on tacking homelessness in Wisconsin.

Michael Basford chairs the governor’s Interagency Council on Homelessness. He hopes the recently released “Welcoming Wisconsin Home” report will spur a discussion. “To understanding that this is something that is not normal and shouldn’t be regarded  as normal, and should be regarded as something that we can put an end to as we know it.”

The report makes numerous recommendations and strategies to address homelessness in Wisconsin. “I think the single biggest takeaway is that if we were able to implement all forty of the policy recommendations that are in the plan, that we would end homelessness as we know it in Wisconsin.”

Basford continued, “I think that people are seeing more and more that this is an issue that is happening all over the state in all 72 counties. Rural, urban, suburban, north, south, east, west. It doesn’t matter, it is a universal issue in this state.”

The “Welcoming Wisconsin Home” report was released last week. The report makes numerous recommendations and strategies to address homelessness. They include improving housing access for people experiencing homelessness, and creating a permanent rental assistance program for veterans.
