Governor Evers Not Ready to Decide Regarding Bail Reform Amendment

Monday, February 28th, 2022 -- 12:01 PM

(Raymon Neupert, WRN) Governor Tony Evers says he's not ready to decide on whether he supports an amendment on bail reform that's making its way through the state legislature.

Speaking on Capital City Sunday, Evers says he wants more time to look at the issues. "My only position is that we have all the people at the table before we decide what is right and what is wrong."

Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes has come out in favor of the elimination of cash bail. Evers says he's not ready to agree with the Lieutenant Governor on eliminating cash bail. "I haven't heard everybody's input on that,” he said.

Civil rights groups argue that cash bail for low-risk offenders puts too many people in jail, causing undue hardship and crowding. Republicans want to make it easier to allow for high bails, in the wake of the fatal crash at the Waukesha Holiday Parade.
